Different types of music videos - DKA 16/06/15
Illustration – The promo illustrates the ideas/narrative in the song lyrics
Within both of these videos the words that the lyrics are saying they as actors are portraying it. When this happens it makes the audience relate easier to the video. As the first video is humorous the audience can relate to it easier as it has actions which all six of the people on screen are doing. The second song, portrays illustration as they are touching mirrors and looking into mirrors during the music promo therefore representing what the music promo is called as well as what the lyrics are saying.
Amplification – Uses a key idea/image from the lyrics and develops it into a concept within the promo. A link remains between the lyric and the promo. In the first Kodaline music promo there is a storyline behind what they are saying but not always linking to what the lyrics are saying. For example when the chorus begins, 'high hopes' it portrays the couple being together as she has ran away from her wedding, 'back to when it started' portraying shots of the couple when they were younger etc. The lyrics link but not all the time. The second music video 'Love The Way You Lie', has references of amplification as the setting that they are in adheres to what the lyrics say. Amplification is a successful video making skill as it can be interesting and go slightly off track but still refers to the video now and again which can remind the audience what the music promo is actually about.
Disjuncture – The promo bears no resemblance to the lyric or its meaning; abstract; often seen as unconventional/ 'arty' video; creating a new range of meanings for the song. In both of these music promos they are completely random videos that do not follow any structure of what the song is saying. For example the second video from 'Coldplay' has no references to elephants during the video but the elephant in the video is the main focus. By having a disjunctured video it makes it more interesting for the audience to follow even though it can be confusing but humorous.
